Chinese Seal (印章), or name stamp, for centuries, have been used by ancient China emperors and officials. Throughout the dynasties, seals were carried by officials as a sign of their authority and position. Commonly made from stone, wood, bamboo or ivory, imperial seals were often made from precious jades, with the inscription on the seals usually referred to being the successor of Heaven or having received the Mandate of Heaven.
Often used by families in China as a form of identification, it is used today as a symbol of authority and adulthood. Most chinese businessmen around the world never forget making themselves a seal. It is believed that holder of a seal carries with them, the authority in their field, and it further symbolizes a smooth transition upwards on their corporate ladder. Some made from jade or Colored Glaze (Liu Li 琉璃), it brings out the holder’s elegance and intelligence.
Today, it is given by parents to their children when they reach adulthood (commonly at age 21 for Singaporeans), to symbolize their blessings to their children in achieving career and family success!
